Gastrointestinal nematode parasites is the correct
terminology for what is commonly referred to as worms.
Gastrointestinal nematode parasitism is one of the most
important production-limiting diseases of cattle in New
Internal parasites can be thought of as 'silent thieves' as the loss in production caused by parasitism often goes unnoticed. Gastrointestinal parasitism can be classed as either clinical or sub-clinical.
Clinically affected animals are easy to identify as they show more obvious symptoms including illthrift, scours, anaemia and weight loss. It is the subclinically affected animals which pose the greatest challenge to farmers as they are more difficult to identify generally with slower decreases in weight gain. While clinical parasitism may be associated with losses in cattle, it is the subclinical animals bearing low levels of infection which result in the greatest economic losses.
Cattle are treated for gastrointestinal nematode parasites by either pour-on, injectable or oral anthelmintic products, the choice of product is normally decided by weighing up effectiveness, ease of use, cost, reliability and available product support.
Outlaw, a broad spectrum combination (ML/clear) pour-on drench containing abamectin and levamisole for the treatment and control of roundworms, lungworms and sucking lice in cattle including endectocide resistant strains. Outlaw is a highly potent combination pour-on to help delay the onset of resistance and is an ideal drench for younger stock or areas where Cooperia spp resistant to endectocides is apparent.
EON is a broad spectrum endectocide for dairy and beef cattle. It contains eprinomectin, a member of the macrocyclic lactone (avermectin/milbemycin) family. It delivers internal parasite and sucking lice control in one low volume application. Its convenience, broad-spectrum efficacy, zero milk, meat and bobby withholding period, dose, and wide margin of safety make it a suitable product for parasite control in beef and dairy cattle.
EDGE is a new combination injection for sheep and cattle, containing the trusted active doramectin, together with the power of levamisole for enhanced protection. EDGE is effective against all important internal production limiting worms, with recent NZ trials to back up efficacy claims. Ideal for young stock in autumn and spring.
